Theater, Opera & Ballet in Sofia
The “Ivan Vazov” National Theatre is Bulgaria’s biggest theatre, as well as the oldest and most stand out and most imposing theatre in the country. This theatre is one of the major landmarks in Sofia due to its prime location and grandiose architecture.
50 years have passed since that particular autumn day in 1953 when in Sofia was officially opened the new National Opera, comfortably sheltered into the friendly arms of the Monumental House of BZNS [The Agrarian Union of Bulgaria], named “Alexander Stambolijsky”after the name of its popular leader.
Theater “Sofia” is located at the end of Zaimov Park, next to Madrid Blvd. Sofia local’s favorite theater, stages and playhouses. Here you can enjoy countless hours having fun with some of the best Bulgarian actors and plays, operas, cabaret and ballet performances. The theater is close to Theatrе Laboratory Sfumato which is one of the most modern theaters in the world.
The Bulgarian Army Theater is located at the center of Sofia, on G.S. Rakovski Str. (the street is also known as Rakovska). The theater has two halls. The main hall is with 500 seats and a smaller underground hall with 60 seats.
Since 1946 the theatre has been considered an independent state cultural institution entitled National Theatre for Youth. Gradually, the company developed two different repertoire sections – one for kids and teenagers, one for adults.
