Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Sofia

This massive, awe-inspiring church is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world.  Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a symbol not just of Sofia but of Bulgaria itself and naturally is a top tourist attraction.  The cathedral was built between 1904 and 1912 to honour the Russian Tsar Alexander II and the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-
Turkish War of 1877-1878, which resulted in Bulgaria being liberated from Ottoman rule.
